On October 30th, Equal Voice Action members joined allies from The People’s Lobby, Reclaim Chicago, A Just Harvest, Black Lives Matter Chicago, and Southsiders Organized for Unity and Liberation to demand an end to money bail in Cook County, Illinois.
Participants came together at the Cook County Criminal Court Building in downtown Chicago to demand that Cook County Judge Timothy Evans and his six bond court judges end the use of money bonds, in accordance with General Order 18.8. This order requires Cook County judges to use money bonds as a last resort and, if requiring a person to pay a money bond, to first confirm that person has the ability to pay. After a public demonstration and almost five hours of occupation at the Cook County Courthouse and Jail, coalition members secured a meeting with Judge Evans to come to terms on the 2500 people currently held in pretrial incarceration because they cannot afford bail.
