Equal Voice Action is thrilled to announce the appointment of longtime economic and social justice leader David Luna as Executive Director.
With more than two decades of leadership experience and service in the social sector, Luna brings deep expertise, commitment, and strategic vision to his new role in guiding the Equal Voice Action (EVA) community in our shared work for family economic security and justice.
Luna, who most recently served as Executive Director of the Chicago-based nonprofit Open Communities, has extensive experience as an executive director and senior manager of nonprofit organizations, and as a consultant and coach to other nonprofit leaders.
Working across sectors, Luna has led organizations and initiatives focused on justice for low-income workers, education justice, health equity, housing justice, and justice for immigrants, with a particular focus on partnering with communities of color.
“I’m deeply honored and excited for this opportunity to help amplify the largely untapped wisdom of low-income and poor families,” Luna said. “I look forward to partnering with Equal Voice Action members, family advisors, allies, and fellow poor and low-income families and communities across the country in the task of building their power so that their voices are heard and heeded in decision-making at the highest levels.”
At Open Communities, Luna worked to enhance the organization’s capacity to deliver on its mission of building more equitable and inclusive communities in north suburban Chicago.
Previously, Luna led a cross-sector health equity initiative to better serve under-resourced communities and communities of color through public policy influence and data-driven improvements in health care.
Luna also laid the foundation for Latinos United, an organization that generated over $70 million in new housing resources for low-income communities in Chicago.
Through these and other equity-focused initiatives, Luna has honed a broad range of expertise, including organizational leadership and program design, as well as policy advocacy and collaboration with organizers and community leaders on the front lines of driving change.
“We are delighted to welcome David as Executive Director of Equal Voice Action,” said EVA Board Chair Joyce Lee. “David is a highly-skilled and dedicated leader who will make a strong partner to our members and families in our movement for family-led policy change.”
Luna earned a Certificate in Nonprofit Management and an MBA from the University of Illinois at Chicago, a JD from the University of Chicago, and a Graduate Certificate in Policy Analysis from the University of North Dakota. He holds certificates in organizing, racial justice, and organizational development, and has served as faculty for various leadership programs.
Luna joins EVA at a crucial time for poor and low-income families in America, and he is finely attuned to the issues and needs of Equal Voice Action members and allied communities.
“I grew up in a working poor family, and am the first and only member of my family of origin to go to college,” said Luna. “The issues of the working poor are not ‘their’ issues, they are my issues and they are the issues of my family, and always will be. I look forward to the important work ahead to make sure that the priorities of low-income families are the priorities of policymakers, too.”
